Coffee from a Stranger

I was standing in the campus center of my college waiting to pay for my coffee this morning.  I was already thinking of all the things I had to do.  I am currently taking a summer course, and it is a lot of work.  When my turn came, I had my card out ready to pay, when the cashier told me.  “No need to pay.”  I looked confused, so she said, “He paid for your coffee.”  She pointed to the man in front of me who had just paid for his drink and breakfast.  I was surprised and so grateful.  I ran after the man as he was leaving and managed to call out, “Thank you so much!”  He smiled and said, “You’re welcome, have a good day!” And then left.

I think everyone wonders “why me?” after someone does something nice for them.  It is especially true when it is a stranger.  It is often true that they do it out of the kindness of their heart, and nothing that we have done has made them do it.  They don’t expect something back, or have any expectations for us to give anything back.

I think that is a beautiful picture of Christ.  He gives us so much that we don’t deserve without ever expecting to be repaid fully for what He has done for us.  It really brings home how true it is that showing God’s love to others is to show kindness and selfless love.  A love that does not expect anything in return.  Sometimes all we can do is turn around and thank Him and praise Him for what He has done.

Psalm 148  English Standard Version (ESV)

Praise the Name of the Lord

148 Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights!
Praise him, all his angels;
    praise him, all his hosts!

Praise him, sun and moon,
    praise him, all you shining stars!
Praise him, you highest heavens,
    and you waters above the heavens!

Let them praise the name of the Lord!
    For he commanded and they were created.
And he established them forever and ever;
    he gave a decree, and it shall not pass away.[a]

Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you great sea creatures and all deeps,
fire and hail, snow and mist,
    stormy wind fulfilling his word!

Mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars!
10 Beasts and all livestock,
    creeping things and flying birds!

11 Kings of the earth and all peoples,
    princes and all rulers of the earth!
12 Young men and maidens together,
    old men and children!

13 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    for his name alone is exalted;
    his majesty is above earth and heaven.
14 He has raised up a horn for his people,
    praise for all his saints,
    for the people of Israel who are near to him.
Praise the Lord!
